Asking about a calculation

We can only check a result if we can reproduce it. Please include:

  • the state
  • your pay frequency, such as weekly, biweekly or monthly
  • your gross pay for one pay period
  • your filing status as entered on the calculator
  • the take-home figure you expected, and where it came from, such as a pay stub or an official calculator

If you copied the link from the calculator after entering your figures, paste that too. It holds the inputs you used. Leave out anything you would rather not share, such as your name or employer; the pay figures alone are enough for us to check a result.

What happens next

We compare your numbers with the tax table on the methodology page and with the official source it links to. If the table or the calculation is wrong, the fix goes out with the next weekly release and the table's checked date changes. If our result matches the source, we reply with the working so you can see where your figure differs.

Other messages

You can also write to suggest a state or calculator we should add, or to report a page that displays wrongly on your device. For a display problem, tell us the page address and the browser you use.

We read every message, but some questions take longer to check than others, so we cannot promise a reply time. We use your email only to reply and to fix what you reported.

What we cannot do

We do not give personal tax advice, and we cannot say what your employer's payroll system will withhold. For questions about your own return or filing, ask a tax professional or the agency itself.
